WHAT IS ELECTRICAL TESTING?
Electrical testing is the process of examining both fixed wiring and electrical appliances to detect faults, degradation or unsafe installation. It includes formal inspections, functional tests, safety checks, and generation of certificates. It ensures your electrical systems continue to perform safely and meet legal & insurance requirements.
WHY TEST ELECTRICS?
- Safety – to detect risks like faulty wiring, poor earthing, insulation breakdown, overloaded circuits & other hazards before they cause fire or electric shock.
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance – landlords in Wales are required to ensure properties are electrically safe, including periodic testing (such as EICR) typically every 5 years for rented properties.
- Peace of Mind – knowing your wiring, appliances and circuits are robust and safe.
- Insurance and Certification – many insurers or mortgage / lease agreements require up-to-date safety certificates.
- Efficiency and Reliability – identifying issues early avoids breakdowns, downtime or more expensive repairs later.
TYPES OF TESTING WE OFFER
LA Alarms delivers a range of testing services, including:
Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) / fixed wiring inspections – full test of wiring, consumer units, circuits & protection devices.
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) – testing of plug-in appliances and devices to make sure they’re safe.
Emergency lighting and fire detection circuit testing.
Landlord safety inspections and tenant safety certificates.
Visual inspections of earthing, bonding, polarity.
Periodic testing in line with BS 7671 wiring regulations.
FREQUENCY & LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
For rental properties in Wales and landlords, an EICR is generally required every 5 years, or at the start of a tenancy. NICEIC+1
For commercial premises, testing often every 3-5 years depending on type of business. NICEIC+1
For private homeowners, while there is no strict legal requirement, experts recommend EICRs at least every 10 years to ensure ongoing safety. NICEIC+1
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TEST
During a typical electrical test with LA Alarms:
We conduct a visual inspection of wiring, consumer unit, switches, sockets, lighting fittings etc.
Carry out instrumental / functional tests: examining insulation resistance, continuity of earthing & bonding, polarity checks, verifying RCDs trip properly, earth loop impedance etc.
Identify any issues: overloaded circuits, faulty components, deteriorated wires, unsafe connections.
Produce a comprehensive report: including a schedule of circuits, any classification of defects, recommendations, and a test certificate for legal / insurer use.
MAINTENANCE & AFTERCARE
If defects are found, we provide clear recommendations and can carry out remedial works.
We offer periodic retesting & follow-up inspections to ensure fixes have been correctly applied.
Advice on best practice to maintain electrical safety between tests.
Support for landlords: supplying copies of reports required by law, ensuring compliance with safety legislation.
